“Hey, there girlfriend.”
Annie turned at the sound of Brie’s voice. As always, her friend was crisp and cool in a light cotton dress, heeled sandals and a Vera Bradley bag. Her breezy summer haircut was flattering around her face. Annie glanced down at her dirty shorts and tank top, her hands filthy from digging in the flower beds in the backyard. “Hey.”
“Want to take a break?” Brie had promised to stop over after the teacher panel met with Dylan. The HR guy had indeed called Annie to be part of the interview committee, but she’d begged off.
“Love to. I’ll get lemonade.”
“No, you sit.” She indicated Annie’s clothes. “You don’t want to track all that dirt into the house. I’ll get it.”
When Brie returned with the pitcher and glasses, they settled under an umbrella table.
Annie took a sip of the cool liquid, hoping it would soothe her suddenly parched throat. “So, how’d the interview go?”
“He’s amazing. Bright, articulate, innovative.” She gave a slight smile. “And gorgeous.” When Annie didn’t respond, Brie asked, “Why didn’t you tell me you had him in class twenty years ago?”
“I didn’t even know he was applying for the principalship. I found out this weekend.”
“What was he like then?”
For days, Annie had thought about how to handle the interviewing. She and Brie had been close since Annie started teaching in Crystal Corners. They were both widows, both had young kids and spent time together outside of school. If Brie knew about her past with Dylan, he wouldn’t get the job. Simple as that. Brie would block hiring him. And Annie’s problem would be over. But could she do that to someone she’d once cared so much about? And, frightening though the notion was, she suspected that somewhere in her unconscious she didn’t want him to leave.
“He was the same as you describe only younger.”
“We’d be lucky to have him as principal. I voted for him.”
Annie’s stomach plummeted. “You voted already?”
“Yes, the administration is expediting the process so he can start ASAP. The decision was unanimous. Even Nick Corelli, who’s usually bored to death on these committees, was enthusiastic. I can’t imagine the administration won’t offer him the job.”
“Hmm.”
Brie’s brow furrowed. “I thought you’d be happy.”
“Oh, I am. I guess I’m still distracted by Trevor’s accident.”
“How is he? Where is he?”
“Joey’s family asked him and Danny over for lunch. They feel guilty about what happened and I think wanted to make sure Trev’s all right.”
“I’m glad he’s doing well. So did you just take care of Trevor this weekend?”
No, I necked like a teenager with our candidate on the porch. “Mostly.”
“You need a man in your life, Annie Jacobs.”
Annie bit back a response. Because a man was sitting right under Brie’s nose, one who’d made Annie remember why she first fell in love with him and then kissed her senseless.
